Front and rear bumpers, fenders, and spoilers of passenger cars were traditionally made of metal, which had the disadvantages of high weight and susceptibility to impact and corrosion. Today, using FRP composites (fiberglass-reinforced plastic) with polyester or vinyl ester resin, these parts are manufactured lighter, stronger, and moldable into complex aerodynamic shapes. The molding process using SMC (Sheet Molding Compound) or RTM (Resin Transfer Molding) enables mass production with consistent quality and a smooth surface ready for painting.
The main advantage of these composite parts is their energy absorption upon impact and lack of shattering in minor collisions, which increases passenger safety. Additionally, lower weight (about 40% lighter than metal) reduces fuel consumption. The resins used contain UV stabilizers and are resistant to road chemicals (salt, gasoline, oil).
