Surfboards

Traditional surfboards were made of polyurethane foam with a polyester resin coating, but today’s professional boards are made of EPS foam (expanded polystyrene) or PVC foam with an epoxy resin coating. Epoxy resin, compared to polyester, has better adhesion to foam, is lighter, and offers greater resistance to impact and cracking. The manufacturing process involves hand lay-up of fiberglass or carbon fiber with epoxy resin over the foam core, followed by sanding and polishing.

Epoxy boards are about 15-20% lighter than polyester types and have greater buoyancy. They also have higher resistance to saltwater and UV radiation, doubling the board’s lifespan.
