Vinyl ester resins are thermoset polymer resins known for their unique combination of epoxy and ester properties. They possess a blend of characteristics that distinguish them from other products. It is worth noting that the polymers in these resins, if used alone, require a long time to fully cure, often taking months or even years.
To accelerate the curing process, catalysts such as MEKP are used. These catalysts significantly increase the curing speed of the resins. Vinyl ester resins exhibit exceptional mechanical and chemical properties, offering significant resistance to organic acids, alkalis, oxidizing chemicals, and salt solutions. With their low viscosity, these resins effectively saturate surfaces, ensuring rapid penetration. Their high adhesive strength also makes them suitable for producing GFRP parts.
Vinyl esters are typically characterized by low viscosity and fast curing at ambient temperatures, eliminating the need for post-curing methods. These resins have excellent adhesion and high strength. While they possess considerable chemical resistance, they are generally more effective in acidic environments than in strong alkaline conditions. (Strong alkaline solutions attack the ester bond, modifying the polyol and carboxylic acid salt.) Additionally, they resist organic solvents. They are used in applications requiring resilience to aggressive chemicals and high temperatures up to 212°F (100°C) in wet conditions or 350°F (177°C) in dry conditions. Common uses include tank linings, floor coatings, secondary containment linings, and coatings for structural steel, walls, and ceilings.
