In the simplest scientific definition of density, it can be said that density is the ratio of mass (m) to volume (v) of a material, and its unit is kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m³).

In other words, density is a parameter indicating the compactness of mass within various elements and objects.

However, if we want to examine the density of materials in different states, we should say that gases have a lower density than liquids, and liquids have a lower density than solids.

The reason for this is the compactness of the particles forming solids, while the particles forming liquids and gases are more dispersed and can move freely.

Examining the density of materials can be considered an important topic because ultimately, what determines whether a material floats or sinks, especially for liquids and gases, is their density.

In fact, a correct understanding of the concept of density can have a significant impact on guiding the movement of various materials floating in water or gases moving in the atmosphere.

As mentioned, the density of materials can be a factor in floating or sinking in liquids.

**Practical Example of Object Density**
For example, imagine two objects placed on water: one sinks into the water, and the other floats on the water.

Here, it should be said that an object whose density is less than the density of the liquid will float, and an object with a higher density will sink into the water.

This effect can even be clearly seen in denser clouds, where denser clouds are positioned at a lower level than clouds with less density.

What you should know is that objects with different densities, even of the same size, can have different weights. For example, a very large fiberglass cube can sometimes weigh the same as a small lead cube.

Now that we are somewhat familiar with the concept of density, in the next section we will discuss the formula for calculating density and obtaining the required parameters in this formula.

**Examining the Density Formula**
As mentioned in the previous section, density is the ratio of mass (m) to volume (v) of a material, and its unit is kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m³).

What is important in this formula is obtaining the mass and volume values of the material and substituting these values into the formula ρ = m/v to obtain the density number.

**Calculating the Mass of Materials**
Determining the density of materials, whether liquids or gases, requires obtaining the mass of the material.

For this purpose, it is first necessary to obtain the weight, or mass, of the container holding the material using a scale.

Then, by subtracting the obtained number from the total weight (weight of the material inside the container), we find the actual mass of the material.

However, keep in mind that for solids, we do not need to perform this measurement.

Generally, scales display the mass or weight of materials in the standard unit of grams. Otherwise, the desired number can easily be obtained by converting the displayed unit to grams.
