What is polyester gelcoat?
Gelcoat is a polyester coating that is applied to the mold surface and later becomes part of the final part. The function of gelcoat is to protect the fiberglass from the external environment and also to provide a suitable appearance for the part. Selecting and applying the appropriate gelcoat eliminates the need for subsequent preparations. Gelcoat manufacturers have different formulations to meet the needs of their customers. By correctly selecting raw materials and appropriate amounts, a gelcoat can be achieved that has good properties for spraying and brush application. Gelcoat must cure within a practical time frame, and when cured properly, properties such as color retention, water resistance, and weather resistance reach optimal levels. When gelcoat is formulated correctly, it is possible to achieve the part's dimensional tolerances. However, even with a good formulation, you may not be able to produce a good product due to equipment defects or errors in spray gun settings. Therefore, both aspects are important.
The resin is the main determinant of the properties of the cured gelcoat coating. A good gelcoat creates a balance between spray or brush application characteristics, repairability, chemical resistance, weather resistance, and price. The resins used in gelcoat have three bases: orthophthalic, isophthalic, and NPG-based resin.
Orthophthalic gelcoat is used when exceptional properties such as weather resistance, water resistance, and resistance to other chemicals are not required. Isophthalic resin provides better toughness and chemical resistance, making the gelcoat more suitable for applications such as boat building or bathtubs. NPG is another material that may be used in making polyester resin. By selecting appropriate ratios in resin production, even better chemical resistance and spring weather resistance properties can be achieved compared to the previous two types. When better properties are desired, such as in the construction of swimming pools and inflatable boats, this material is used. By combining it with isophthalic acid, iso/NPG gelcoat is produced.
