What is polymer concrete resin?

Polymer concrete is made by combining concrete with polymer resins.

The combination of concrete with polyester resin is used to increase the strength and resistance of concrete against pressures and stresses.

How is polyester resin polymer concrete produced?

The combination involves mixing polyester resin with concrete and natural or synthetic fibers of short and long lengths. In the mixing process of polymer concretes, liquid polyester resin (monomer) is used instead of water. Polyester resin acts as the monomer in the polymer concrete mixture. Polyester resin in concrete makes it hard and strong and, most importantly, provides adhesion.

Polyester resin polymer fillers consist of two parts:

  1. Coarse aggregate (stiff part) – usually contains coarse grains.

  2. Fine aggregate (soft part) – contains fine grains.

Examples of soft fillers include perlite stone, clay, and even pumice. Examples of stiff fillers include reet, hematite, and qatir.

Advantages of soft and hard fillers: Soft fillers are used to prevent excess volume in the concrete, i.e., to reduce empty voids in the concrete (e.g., silica powder, ash, calcium carbonate, mica, etc.). Using these mineral and organic fillers can create electrical conductivity properties in the concrete and also increase strength and resistance to impact and stress.

Properties of these polyester polymer concretes include low water absorption and retention, high strength and resistance to physical and frictional factors such as abrasion and corrosion, stability against chemical reactions, and high resistance to cracking in winter due to its stability against freezing and thawing.
